WELCOME TO THE STORY TELLER

What is street photography?

The first image that typically comes to mind for the term street photography, is an image of a stranger just walking down the street in a city like Memphis, Houston, or Chicago.

Simply put, street photography is about documenting everyday life and society. I personally don’t think street photography needs to be shot in the street. You can shoot at the train station, airport, at the mall, at the beach, at the park, in the bus, trolley or subway, in the dentist’s office, in the grocery store, or in any other public places.

Therefore if you are drawn to taking photos in public (of mostly people) you are probably interested in street photography. Also as a side-note, I don’t think that street photography has to include people in it (although the best ones generally do have people in it). You can still create compelling images of everyday downtown graffiti, architecture, reflections in a window.

So don’t get hung up about what “street photography” is and isn’t. The most important thing at the end of the day is creating powerful, compelling, and emotional images.

The street is the most public and accessible of places. Street photography is the most public and accessible form of photography. Anyone can do it. You do not need an expensive camera. You do not need a big studio, professional lighting, or beautiful models. We all have the same content out there, and it’s up to us to figure out how to capture that and bring it home.

In addition, while technical quality is always important to every form of photography, it is not celebrated in street photography in quite the same way.

I can truthfully say I got my money’s worth out of Saturdays Workshop. I got out of my normal shooting zone. I got better shooting ideas by being with a group. I got expert instruction from someone who has “Been there and done that.” Got most wins for me in digital competition at Memphis Camera Club – Barry Baskin
